Beef Congee Recipe

This is a nourishing meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Congee is especially great for children and when you are recovery from a head cold or illness. This recipe below includes beef and beef stock however chicken or plain is also delicious. You can experiment with many different ingredients such as Chinese red dates, cashews or any nuts, and sesame seeds.


  • 4 spring onions chopped
  • I tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 tbsp org butter or ghee
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 litre homemade organic beef stock
  • 1 litre of filtered water
  • 1 handful organic goji berries to taste
  • 200g organic eye filet thinly sliced
  • Gluten free soy sauce to taste
  • Chilli sauce to taste
  • Coriander or rocket to garnish
  • Sesame oil to taste
Beef Congee

  1. Melt butter in a heavy based pot
  2. Add spring onions, ginger sauté for 1 minute
  3. Add rice and give another stir
  4. Pour in stock and water and bring to the boil
  5. Reduce heat to a simmer and place on tightly sealed lid and cook until mushy and still moist, stirring occasionally. If it becomes too dry add more water and keep it on low heat
  6. To serve add sesame oil, soy sauce, chilli and garnish to taste
